Orthognathic/Corrective Jaw Surgery

Genioplasty (chin surgery)

Genioplasty is a surgical operation for chins that are asymmetrical, too small, too prominent or combined with surgery of the upper and/or lower jaw (see Orthognathic Surgery below).

A Genioplasty can involve surgery by cutting the bone of the chin to reduce or reposition the bone, altering the shape and/or position of the chin.

Some of Dr Lincoln & Dr Higgins indications (reasons) for Genioplasty surgery may include:
  • Hypoplasia (chin too small)
  • Hyperplasia (chin too large)
  • Asymmetry of the chin

In some very select cases, Genioplasty is performed by use of an artificial implant which may be placed to increase the dimensions of the chin.

As Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr Trent Lincoln & Dr Andrew Higgins are specialists in Genioplasty and Orthognathic Surgery.

For some patients, a double chin that existed prior to the Genioplasty can be treated using Fat Dissolving injections after the patient’s swelling has fully subsided. This can be discussed at the time of consultation and treatment with the team at Sunshine Coast Oral, Facial & Implant Specialists.

Orthognathic/Corrective Jaw Surgery

Orthognathic Surgery (from the Greek Orthos = Correct and Gnathos = Jaw) is performed on the upper, lower jaws or chin to correct malposition or size discrepancies.
These jaw issues can sometimes cause problems with speech, chewing, appearance or breathing and can be congenital or acquired through trauma or disease.

Some of the indications (reasons) for Orthognathic Surgery may include:
  • Jaw discrepancies such as:
    • Top jaw (maxilla) is too narrow, wide, long or short
    • Lower jaw (mandible) is too small, large, set back, set forward, too narrow or too wide
  • Other Dentofacial or facial skeletal deformities that cannot be fixed by braces alone
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea caused by a skeleto-facial deformity such as a small or narrow upper or lower jaw

Genioplasty and Orthognathic Surgery is usually provided by Dr Lincoln & Dr Higgins as part of a combined treatment plan with your Orthodontist.

Drs Lincoln and Higgins will work very closely with your Orthodontist to ensure the best aesthetic and functional outcomes for you.
